#TwitterSmarter Podcast: The Power of Conversation on Twitter with Joe Martin

Listen in iTunesSoundcloudGooglePlay or iHeartRadio.

Joe Martin is the Head of Social Analytics and Brand Evangelist at Adobe. He has 10 years experience managing various areas of marketing including research, media buying, social, and overall strategy.

As the Head of Social Insights his team is responsible for using data insights from social to influence strategy, product development, monitor the brand, and improve content strategy. Basically Joe is an uber smart data guy. His analyses have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Associated Press, and Forbes.

In this episode, Joe shares helpful advice that will help you get heard. Whether it’s creating fascinating content for your blog, participating in Twitter chats or being featured on a podcast, it’s all about the conversation. You can build a following by going to where everyone is at, like trending topics and hashtags. You want to get active and share your point of view. Be engaging and have fun.

Episode Highlights:

  • Joe advises it’s good to create your own content like a blog post on Medium, joining a podcast, or joining a Twitter chat.
  • Be active and share your point of view on things.
  • Joe talks about the importance of building a following by going to places where there’s high volume. Jump on Twitter chats like #TwitterSmarter and #AdobeChat. Find places where you can interact with people in your industry.
  • Learn how Trending Hashtags can work in your favor. Just by having something funny to add to the conversation, or sharing a really good point of view, it can catch fire. You’ll create a cohort of people that share an interest of yours. They’ll engage with your other posts then suddenly you’ll have a pretty active following. This is a great strategy to quickly build your engagement and following.
  • As you grow your following, it becomes helpful to build Twitter lists to manage different groups and interests. It will help you stay organized so you can see the stream of tweets from those you want to pay close attention to like industry leaders, customers and even competitors.
  • Joe shares a story about having a fun “side conversation” with Patrick Kitchell during #AdobeChat (see tweets below). It’s when you have a conversation with one person (sometimes a few) within the Twitter chat conversation. It’s a great way to connect and build relationships with people. In this case, Joe and Patrick were trading silly Led Zeppelin puns back and forth with each other. This can produce a fun environment.
