Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant and professional speaker who has worked with clients including Google, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Fidelity, Yale University, and more. She’s a regular contributor to the Harvard Business Review and many other great publications. She’s the author of a brand new book out this week called “Entrepreneurial You.” And she’s also written two other widely popular books, “Reinventing You” and “Stand Out”.

In this episode, Dorie shares her insights on leveraging your content on Twitter. She talks about using Twitter to share “evergreen” content. When we talk about evergreen, we mean content that doesn’t expire or go stale. It’s good today, next week, or even 3-6 months from now. Timeless material is valuable and should be leveraged. Check your blog. You probably have content you can leverage on Twitter more than once. Dorie says the key is to look for the pieces that can continue to add value to new readers lives. What’s most important is to fully maximize the value of the content that you do create.

We also talk about our favorite evergreen tools – Dorie uses Edgar and I use SocialJukebox. You’ll hear about all this and more.

Episode Highlights:

  • Dorie is a big fan of using Twitter as a way of sharing evergreen content. It’s timeless material that’s valuable.
  • Twitter is a really great way to resurface content and get the conversation started again.
  • With 500 million tweets a day, there’s lots of content out there. Look for ways to stand out so you’ll get seen and heard.
  • Hear Dorie talk about your need to “slice and dice it” differently so your content continues to give you compounding value.
  • As an in-demand speaker and consultant, Dorie’s time is extremely valuable. She doesn’t want to miss any important tweets that come her way. So she has her VA (virtual assistant) triage messages that way she doesn’t miss any high priority tweets. She wants to be able to rapidly respond to them herself.
  • Dorie talks about how when you’re traveling in different time zones and dealing with wifi connections, it’s important to spot your most important messages that way you don’t miss opportunities.
  • Hear why Thunderclap is an effective tool and strategy to get your friends and colleagues to share your most important content. Dorie is using it to promote her new book, Entrepreneurial You.
  • Dorie uses Edgar and likes the ability to have a library of evergreen tweets. It’s a great strategy that will intersperse some of your older, classic material with things you’re proactively putting out on a day-to-day basis. She uses Hootsuite as a compliment to Edgar, to share one-time tweets.

My Favorite Quote:

“You need to build a drumbeat. We can’t, in terms of our time and sanity, keep creating new content all the time. Yes, new content creation is a discipline. But what I think is even more important is maximizing fully the value of the content that you do create.”

Tools, Links and Apps Mentioned:

  • Edgar – recycle your best social updates automatically
  • SocialJukebox – automated social network tool
  • Thunderclap – platform that let’s people rally together to spread a message
  • Hootsuite – social media management tool created to help businesses grow their social media presence
