When it comes to social media, you’re in control of what you see. You’re able to choose whose content you allow into your feed by following people that you’re genuinely interested in. And if you discover someone is sharing posts that you no longer want to see, you simply need to mute or unfollow.
But what if you’re new to the platform? Maybe you’re just getting started on Twitter and you’re not sure how to find great people or how to follow someone else’s posts… Well, this post is breaking down the very simple steps to discover new accounts and follow people on Twitter. Plus, I’m even sharing how you can follow topics as well, so you can keep track of all your favorite conversations.
To make it a great experience for you, you obviously want to follow people on Twitter who are sharing content that you love. This way, you look forward to logging onto the platform and scrolling through your feed to see what others have to say. But if you need some help finding new people to follow, I have a few ideas for you.
So, you’ve come across this awesome person on Twitter. This account is active, sharing new content daily. Not only that, but these tweets are exactly what you want to see in your feed. There’s so much value and you don’t want to miss out on anything this person shares!
To follow this account and see their posts in your feed, you have a couple of options. You could visit the user’s profile and click the “Follow” button shown on the right side, which you can see in the photo above.
Another option would be to follow the account directly from one of their tweets. In the top, right-hand corner of a tweet, you will see a small arrow that points downward. Click that arrow and a menu will pop up displaying a few different options. Choose the option that says “Follow” and you’re all set. You’ll now see this account’s tweets in your feed and you also know two ways to follow people on Twitter!
Twitter introduced the ability to follow topics back in November of 2019. This option allows you to stay updated on the things that matter most to you. Following topics is very similar to following accounts. And once you follow a particular topic, you’ll begin to see tweets about it in your feed. These tweets will come from a variety of accounts, such as experts or fans.
But what kind of topics can you follow? Well, you might want to see updates about your favorite band, a sports team you like, or even a celebrity. By following a topic, it eliminates the need to regularly conduct searches. Instead, you can open Twitter and see posts without any additional work on your part.
To follow a topic that’s of interest to you, you’ll first need to click on the “More” option in the menu on the left-hand side of Twitter. This will display a new menu, where you will find “Topics” near the top of the list. Click on that.
Next, click on “Follow some topics.” You’ll then be able to choose from different categories such as: entertainment, gaming, hobbies and interests, music and radio, and sports. From there, Twitter will show you even more options to narrow it down.
Let’s say you’re really excited about The Oscars and you want to stay updated on all the latest tweets about it. You’ll find that option under the “Entertainment” category. Simply click the “Follow” button and then “Done” at the top, right-hand side of the menu. Now you’ll see tweets about The Oscars in your feed.
If you ever want to unfollow a topic, navigate back to the “Topics” page and unfollow those that you are no longer interested in seeing.
