We all know that engaging with other people is a huge part of what makes social media such an incredible tool. I mean, we can quickly and easily have conversations with people from all around the world thanks to platforms like Twitter.

But what can you do to make sure those new connections on Twitter are actually beneficial for you and those you’re chatting with? Well, that’s what I want to share in this post!

From finding people to talk to, topics to discuss, and embracing your unique personality, these tips will ensure the conversations you have on Twitter are always powerful.

1. Find Relevant People to Follow

The first step if you want to make better connections on Twitter is to actually find some great people to follow. I mean, what’s the point in social media if you aren’t going to follow along with people who are sharing amazing content? From there, you need to find some interesting Twitter users that are worth following along with. A great place to start is to find leaders and influencers in your industry. These are people who might speak at conferences, they may be getting interviewed for publications, or they could even be guest hosting Twitter chats. So, make sure you keep an eye out!

Participating in chats in general is a fantastic way to meet new people. It’s also a good idea to follow your favorite brands and any tools you use to say updated and see what kinds of content they’re sharing. You might even want to follow along with the writers who contribute to some of your favorite outlets.

2. Participate in Topics Related to Your Niche

When it comes to actually jumping in on conversations, one of the ways you can do this is by searching for keywords or hashtags related to topics your brand covers. This will surely bring up some conversations that are already taking place, which you might be able to chime in on. Twitter’s Advanced Search feature is actually perfect for this!

It’s also smart to have a Twitter list where you save people in your industry who are actively engaging with others on the platform. By doing this, you can have better connections on Twitter because you’ll be more likely to see what others are talking about and spot conversations that are already happening.

You may even want to keep an eye on trending topics and jump in on the topics that are related to your niche. Just make sure you always do your research before blindly jumping in.

And finally, keep in mind that you can always start conversations of your own. Ask questions to get the conversation going. You can talk about the latest news in your industry or ask for opinions on a hot topic. You don’t have to wait to discover the perfect conversation. You can start it.

That’s why you should take advantage of it. Instead of lurking on Twitter or just posting without ever engaging, commit to reaching out to a few new people each week.

You don’t have to be following someone in order to strike up a conversation. If there’s an interesting topic being discussed and you have something to add, don’t hesitate to jump right in. It really is as simple as that! Just don’t reply with something negative or have a know-it-all attitude with your reply. A genuine, positive message will always be well-received. And as said above, no sales pitches!
